This song, by The Beatles, is from their 1965 album Rubber Soul. It was written mainly by John Lennon, credited to the Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership and influenced by the introspective lyrics of Bob Dylan. The song is considered a milestone in the Beatles' development as songwriters. The song also features a sitar part, played by lead guitarist George Harrison, that marked the first appearance of the Indian string instrument on a Western rock recording.
The song's lyrics are about an extramarital affair that John Lennon was involved in, as hinted in the opening couplet: "I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me." Paul McCartney pointedly explained that the term "Norwegian Wood" was a sarcastic reference to the cheap pine wall panelling then in vogue in London. This song was released on Rubber Soul on 3 December 1965. It marked the first example of a rock band playing the sitar on one of their recordings. It was also issued on a single with "Nowhere Man" in Australia and was a number 1 hit there in May 1966.
