The pop-rock ballad "If" was written by American singer-songwriter David Gates in 1971. The song has been recorded by numerous artistes including of course by David Gates himself with his band “Bread”. Telly Savalas recorded a mostly-spoken version which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in March 1975. It has the shortest title of any song to reach number one in the UK.
