Anthony
comes from Dronfield, a small Derbyshire market town midway between
Chesterfield and Sheffield. His interest in music became apparent at a
very early age and, when he was seven years old, he began group lessons
with the late John Madin, a famous Cinema Organist and local music dealer.
In 1984 a family holiday was spent at the National Electronic Organ
Festival in Morecambe, which was presented by the Association of Organ
Enthusiasts. There, Anthony met many famous concert organists, amongst
them Tim Flint who was later to become his tutor. The National Festival
became a regular date for Anthony and over the years, he became
increasingly involved in it’s presentation as a member of the stage crew.
On several occasions, festival producer Trevor Daniels (brother of TV
illusionist, Paul) invited Anthony to take part in this and other A.O.E
festivals as an artiste in his own right.
As a concert artiste, Anthony’s career began by playing for his own
society in Chesterfield and fund raising concerts for local charity groups
which he continues to support in this way. Other local organ societies
were quick to book him and his reputation quickly spread around the
country bringing bookings from ever further afield and he celebrates over
15 years on the concert circuit as a semi-professional musician.
Despite now travelling many thousands of miles performing throughout the
United Kingdom and on the continent, Anthony is unable to satisfy the
demand for his concert performances. However, in response to the ever
increasing number of requests, he has recently produced his first
recording “Brilliant Cut” under his own label, Anthem International. It
has received much acclaim by reviewers of all of the major organ and
keyboard publications and has several times been featured on BBC Radio 2
and local radio.
Having
progressed through a Welson and a couple of Technics organs, Anthony’s
present instrument is the magnificent white and gold Böhm Diamant 400CT-M
– the only one of it’s kind in the World! Anthony has frequently been
invited to visit the Böhm factory at Bad Oeynhausen in Germany to meet the
design team and learn of the company’s latest technical developments and
he has regularly appeared at organ festivals in Germany. He has also
frequently demonstrated Böhm instruments in the U.K.
Anthony’s interest in the organ scene is not restricted to playing
however. He teaches - computing as well as music - and is a member of
North East Derbyshire Organ Society where for several years, he held the
position of Concert Secretary which made him responsible for arranging the
society’s concert programmes and engaging concert artistes, so he is also
very well aware of life on the other side of the musical fence.
All of this though, is in addition to his “proper job”! Anthony’s working
life began as an apprentice refrigeration and catering engineer before
becoming fully qualified in his field and progressing to Technical
Manager. More recently, with a former colleague, Anthony has his own
business which has taken him away from the concert circuit making only
special appearances.
Anthony takes great care to ensure that his concert programme is varied in
musical styles and sounds, his intention being to include something for
everyone and to make his performance a memorable one for young and old
alike.
